About Policing
The Policing unit at SaferAfrica deals with the provision of technical capacity and financial support to law enforcement officials.
The importance of improving the overall policing capacity in Southern Africa has not escaped the attention of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organization (SARPCCO). The Chiefs of Police have over the last couple of years identified specific areas of policing that require additional capacitating primarily in the form of training. In addition it has been recognized by them that by developing training curricula applicable to the region they are sharing expertise and ultimately developing training programmes that will contribute to enhanced cross-border co-operation.
SaferAfrica has been providing both technical and financial support to SARPCCO in the development of a counter-terrorism training curricula. The police chiefs approved this curriculum and the first such course was executed in 2005.
SaferAfrica has also assisted in the development of a cross-border curriculum in which participants are instructed on the identification of arms caches, as well as how to lift and destroy these.
Currently SaferAfrica is assisting the SARPCCO Training Sub-Committee to develop a drugs identification course for police officials in this region. The contents of this course was approved at the SARPCCO AGM in August 2006.
Bilaterally SaferAfrica provides support to a number of countries, to improve their capacity to deal with SALW and other policing matters. In Mauritius SaferAfrica together with the South African Police Service are helping the Police Force of Mauritius to develop a Crime Intelligence Analysis capacity so as to identify emerging crime threats.
