Legislation
At a national level, drawing on both our technical expertise and experience in the development of policing legislation, SaferAfrica engages on various levels with regards to inputting into national legislative processes. SaferAfrica has strong expertise in the area of legislation development and facilitation which is utilized for the development of both new, and the revision of existing, national legislation. SaferAfrica contributes technical expertise to legislation revision processes on various policing issues to the appointed policy drafting committee. As a member of civil society we perform a role in monitor policing, crime, safety and security debates and trends at a national, regional and international level, and participate in submission processes in order to contribute to national review of legislation. SaferAfrica also engages in primary research on legislation which contributes to these debates.
At a regional level, SaferAfrica engages in a number of regional legal drafting committees as both a facilitator and a technical expert. In these structures, we assist in the development of minimum standards for the regional harmonization of policing legislation. These include issues such as the minimum sentences, modalities for the exchange of information and joint policing operations.
