Peace and Security Activities 2003

  1. African Standby Force. This document was presented to the second AU Summit in Maputo (June)

  2. Assisted the AU Commission's Peace and Security Directorate in the generation of the Common African Defence and Security Policy (CADSP)
    Responded to the AU Commission's Peace and Security Directorate's request, wrote the base document, and engaged in the expert consultative process that lead to the generation of the Common African Defence and Security Policy (CADSP). This document was presented to the second AU Summit in Maputo (July).

  3. Developed compatibility between the AU's MCPMR and the United Nation's Security Council
    Ensured that the AU's Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution (MCPMR) and the United Nation's Security Council are compatible and complementary in terms of their mandates, structures, human and logistical capacities

  4. Assisted in the formulation of an overall AU defence policy
    Assisted in the formulation of an overall AU defence policy, through an analysis and harmonisation of existing defence policies at national, sub-regional and continental levels

  5. Inter-locuting with the G-8 Member States Ad-hoc Task Team on PSO
    Inter-locuting with the G-8 Member States Ad-hoc Task Team on Peace and Support Operations (created in Kananaskis-Canada) Facilitated all meetings between the representatives of the NEPAD Steering Committee and the G-8 Members representatives (2002 through 2003). Providing technical backup to all meetings of the NEPAD HSGIC and the G-8 Member States, Kananaskis (June, 2002), and Evian (June 2003). G-8 Member States, in Kananaskis and the following year in Evian  (June)

  6. Provision of support Officer to the NEPAD Secretariat
    Provision of a Support Officer to the NEPAD Secretariat to facilitate the establishment of the APR Secretariat  and facilitate the establishment and support the Panel of Eminent Persons (June 2003-2006)

  7. Sponsored, organized and facilitated the Third Women Peace Table Seminar (Department of Defence)

  8. Assisted in the crafting of base documents relating to the establishments of the APRM

  9. Assisted in mapping of strategy for integration of NEPAD into the AU
    Assisted and supported in the mapping out of the strategy for integration of NEPAD into the AU, as per the AU Decision no. Doc. EX/CL/60(III) (July)

  10. Assisted in developing NEPAD's communications and outreach overall strategy (November-December)

  11. Provided expertise in the development of concept and discussion papers for the Third Women Peace Table Seminar (September –October)

  12. Facilitated consultative brainstorming leading to creation of PSC

    Facilitated a consultative brainstorming meeting of the Central Organ that resulted in the Protocol Relating to the Establishing of the Peace and Security Council. This protocol was adopted at the 1st AU Summit in July 2002. The Protocol entered ratification stage in December 2003

  13. Facilitated and sponsored a joint AU-NEPAD consultation on peace and security
    Facilitated and sponsored a joint AU-NEPAD Consultation on Peace and Security to increase alignment and coordination between the AU and NEPAD on matters of peace and security. This led to the crystallisation of the African Peace and Security Agenda (Addis Ababa, February 2003).

  14. Sponsored, organized and facilitated the Third Women Peace Table Seminar (October 2003) of the South African Department of Defence

  15. Participated in AU workshop on the Operationalisation of the Continental Early Warning System
