Zone of Peace and Cooperation

Brief overview Final Declaration Plan of Action

Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic

In November 2006 SaferAfrica was identified by the Government of Angola in its capacity of future Chair of the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic as the only non-governmental organisation to provide technical support and accompany the revitalising process of this structure, better known as the Luanda Initiative. Through an agreement between the organisation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Angola, SaferAfrica provided technical and financial support for the preparatory process of the VI Ministerial Meeting of Member States and for the Meeting itself.

The process included three preparatory workshops, held in New York in March 2007, Montevideo in April 2007, and Buenos Aires in May 2007. Each of the workshops dealt with one specific area of interest of the Zone, namely Defence, Peace and Security, and the protection of Natural Maritime Resources and the Environment.

The Ministerial Meeting took place in Luanda, Angola in June 2007 and had the participation of all 24 Member States at the ministerial level. The Ministerial Meeting based its final Declaration and Plan of Action in the final documents from the three preparatory workshops.

Through the signature of two Memorandums of Understanding, SaferAfrica became an implementing partner for the current Angolan Chair and the future Uruguayan Chair of the Zone.
