Regional and National Electoral Processes

Democratic Governance

Democratic Governance Programme: Focuses on strengthening electoral processes, parliamentary capacity and research on governance issues as critical elements in promoting democratic governance.

Types of activities undertaken include the following:

  • Development of publications in support of enhanced participation of parliaments in regional processes.
  • Capacity building, dissemination and dialogue activities at national level on electoral processes
  • Dialogue activities between civil society and governmental structures with aim of enhancing partnerships on effective governance.
  • Enhancing  cross partisan co-operation and consensus for work (series of workshops/dialogue activities).

The Programme has the following projects for the period 2006-2009:

  • Parliamentary Involvement in the Ratification, Domestication and Implementation of SADC Protocols: this project aims to enhance parliamentary and civil society participation in the ratification and implementation of SADC Protocols [more].
  • Strengthening Democratic Processes: This project includes the capacity building and reinforcing of electoral processes with the participation of key stakeholders such as civil society and political parties. The programme works at the national level to support democratic structures such as parliaments by providing technical assistance, particularly in states engaged in post conflict reconstruction and development.[more].
  • Strengthening the Role of the ECOWAS Parliament in Preventing and Resolving Conflict in West Africa: this project will develop pilot training programmes and initiatives to enable parliamentarians to play an effective role in preventing and resolving conflict
