Arms Destruction in Botswana

During July 2006 the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Commissioner Kenny Kapinga, requested SaferAfrica to assist the Botswana Police with a public destruction of firearms. This destruction formed part of the Botswana Police Day on 12 August 2006.

Sarel Buijs from SaferAfrica assisted the Botswana Police with the destruction. Prior to the destruction (08 August 2006 to 11 August 2006) key weapon specifications and identification information was recorded. All earmarked firearms were inspected. A physical wooden structure for the attachment of the firearm was built, and the identified firearm attached.

On 12 August 2006 the President of Botswana, HE Festus Mogae, lit the flame that destroyed the firearms. The spire burnt for ten minutes, before collapsing. After an hour, the Botswana Fire Brigade extinguished the remaining coals. The remnants of this process were taken to Selibe-Phikwe for the final destruction by melting.
